Biographical note: 
Ana I. Melo holds a PhD in Social Sciences from the University of Aveiro (European PhD) and a BSc and a MSc Degree in Economics from the University of Coimbra. She is currently an Associate Professor at the School of Technology and Management from the University of Aveiro (ESTGA-UA), where she has been teaching subjects in the areas of management and economics, a researcher at the Centre for Research in Higher Education Policies (CIPES) and an external researcher at the Research Unit on Governance, Competitiveness and Public Policies (GOVCOPP). Her current research interests lie in the areas of performance measurement and management in public services, public management and governance structures, and territorial innovation systems, with special emphasis on the role played by higher education institutions in development-oriented innovation. Her publications include articles in journals such as Public Management Review, International Journal of Productivity and Performance Management, International Journal of Urban and Regional Research, European Planning Studies, Studies in Higher Education and Higher Education. She is also the co-author of chapters edited by Palgrave and Springer.
